Interview With Sameer And Sarmad

Recently, Atif Aslam performed at a concert in Doha,Qatar named desert fusion 2010 , the review of which I shall put up at a later date, you’ll have to stay tuned for that.

Atif Aslam had come with his live band and I managed to get hold of two of them ,both of whom are captioned in the title.

After having a very casual interview ,I can easily say that these are what Real Pakistanis are like, and what Pakistan is about & not the one shown
on the conspired and controlled Pakistani media

For Hire

Here is the poem I read at July’s Tweetup

For Hire

So this particular day
I was getting late
No time for breakfast
On a plate

I was in a hurry
All things lied scurry
Stuffed food in my mouth
My head hit the wall, couldn’t shout

Couldn’t sit down and
Nurture the wound
To console myself
I uttered a sound

I got out of my house
Located on E-ring
Got into the car
Didn’t see the steering

Fumbled in my pockets
To find the keys
The only thing that came out
Were salted peas

I realized I was sitting in the backseat
When there were no pedals below my feet
“Right right” , I said to myself
I had to take a taxi to work

All of a sudden I hear a thunder roar
The sound was from a a guy running towards me I was sure
When the yellow car owner gave me a jab
I thought This is Qatar, the car had to be green to be a cab

Atif and Strings – Ab Khud hi kuch -Review

After the energetic Humain Kiya Hua in Coke Studio Season 2, a song that Atif had sung about to change oneself in order to change society, comes Ab Khud Hi Kuch. Atif’s solo track talked about self screening while Ab Khud Hi Kuch as the title suggests, apart from sharing the same ideology also tells to take collective actions towards a common goal. With Atif collaborating with Strings on this track, it is only natural that there be mutuality in this track. With Atif being a part of the Ab Khud Hi Kuch it is easy to say that this is a sequel to the Coke Studio song. And this is just the clever beginning to a song that has innovation written all over it.

If the total essence of the song is taken into view, it is completely apt to this time where and what Pakistan is passing through at the moment. It is a progressive song but the same sentiment lies within the slowly increasing population of real Pakistanis.

The structure of the track itself is quite innovative with only two lines in each verse. With Atif in a song we can expect it to more then just a conventional song. Lyrics in the song are simple and effective. Faisal Kapadia starts the song with his soft mellow tone and Atif sings the second line in the first verse in a higher tone and a stronger voice taking the song towards the prechorus. Atifs deviation in the second verse from what the composition shows reflects how one should take measures of ones own remaining in the boundaries of what is permissible at the same time.

Another clever aspect of the song is that in place of a regular new guitar solo, the Pakistani National Anthem is played and out of respect one is obligated to stand up and that not only literally but also under the meaning of “Taking a Stand ”

Entire song asks for the lethargy and dead conscious to the left. Final lines (yeh kahani hui puraani, kitnay logon ki sunee zubaani, tumhein jo kehna hai keh do, yehi waqt hai, zamana kahey ga, iss kahani ka akhir ab tum ko badalna parey ga) of the song are also of pertinent significance where the entire world now has eyes over Pakistan and is blindly convinced of the terrible state of one sided misrepresented depiction of Pakistan and the typecasting of all Pakistanis. We must use this very spotlight and show the world what Pakistan is in actual and be able to do what the tagline of this blog is “changing Perceptions”

A positive song with a positive message. The degree in which this track moves you shows the effect of this song and is a good measure to judge how pro Pakistan you are!
and a good measure of which will be the no. of views this video gets

Noori Eats Ice-Cream

This Post has been written taking note of the various criticisms that came forward on The track Jhoom Lay (Cornetto) by Noori . Although numb mindsets rarely can be changed but this post is an attempt in doing so. So Noori made and sang a song for an advert for an ice cream. Big Deal? Image Lost? Sound Lost? Fan Base Lost? Deviation from Core Work ? This criticism is plain absurdity, the song is well written, sung and has a good composition, and these are the essentials of a good song. Infact, this song is way better than the conventional jingle what an advertisement deserves, don’t you think? Artists all over the world endorse products and act in commercials, an artist as popular as Micheal Jackson (if you know him) can work in a commercial for Pepsi, we can accept that. In a western world when artists release performance based videos, that is totally fine But the same concept isn’t digested for Pakistani videos and we get to hear the “no creativity” comment, I mean look Pakistani ads have now have complete storylines and proper songs to go with them, this is creativity at its best! About the lyrics: When the Pakistani public listens and very energetically dances to 3rd class poetry at weddings, where is the sense of lyrical content then? The lyrics in the track Jhoom Lay still make more sense than those Indian movie songs written by prolific lyricists And the Advertisement itself: So “teeny bop love” portrayal by Noori doesn’t suit them? Point No. 1 is falling in love restricted to a certain age? Point no. 2, when they excitingly see Aamir Khan playing the role of a university student (and we very clearly endorse such movies), where is the whole “going with the image “then?

Interview With Zameer Rizvi

Zameer Rizvi a talented musician, lyricist, composer and performer, released his debut album “From under the bleachers” in 2009, the album was another stepping stone for Pakistani artists making songs in english.
I also wrote the album review which can be read here Zameer Performing

Lets get down to the Q & A shall we?

1). Why do you think your album release didn’t get you the popularity
of a white skinned artist would have gotten with the type of the songs
on your debut album “under the bleachers”, Is it a defect in Marketing
from your part or are the music purchasers to blame here
?

I think good music transcends skin colour. I feel that the success of
my debut album was neither helped nor hindered by my race. I think our
marketing was really successful actually! Without expecting it, one of
my songs was licensed by the Paralympics, I had the opportunity to
perform on a cruise with John Mayer, my album was produced by a 5 time
Grammy award winner, and I toured North America, Europe and Pakistan,
all while maintaining a very comfortable living.

2). Are you satisfied with the response for the album ,”under the bleachers”?

I’m thrilled with the response! It was a self-released album, and my
expectations were in proportion to that. I didn’t expect this to sell
millions. An album release on iTunes costs $20 and anyone can put
anything up for sale there. That’s what I did, and hoped for the best.
I got more than I asked for and I’m grateful for the wonderful
response.

3). Did you ever consider that as an artist it would be more
satisfying in Urdu from the amount of feedback you could have gotten
compared to when singing in English
?

I don’t do this for the feedback or response. I do this because I love
it. So no, I didn’t consider changing my art to get more feedback. I
do love Urdu, and grew up speaking it. And in the future I intend to
write an Urdu album, but not because I want feedback. I’ll do it
because I feel like doing it. I also disagree that an Urdu artist gets
a better response than an English one. Bryan Adams sells out stadiums
in Karachi. He sings in English.

4). The track “Yaad” which you did in Urdu, do you have further plans
to make more songs like that or will you be sticking to English
as the language of choic
e?
Absolutely, ‘Yaad’ is the 3rd single off my first Urdu album which
will be released later this year. Other singles that have already been
released include ‘Rahon Ko’ and ‘Jannat’.

5). Being in Canada, do you think there is enough of a music community
to share ideas with and jamming with other than
people from your own band
?

Canada is definitely small, and its population is only 10% of that of
the US. However, Toronto is huge, and is one of the largest
metropolitan cities on the continent, with around 7 million people.
There is a huge independent music movement, and there are an
incredible number of talented people to jam with. This why I change my
band line-up so often, every time I play with someone new, I have to
bring them on stage with me!

6).When can we expect the next album to be out ?

My next English album will be out in the beginning of 2011. :) My
first Urdu album will be out this year!

7).Any plans to perform in other parts of the world other that North
America or Europe
?

Well I did 4 shows in Pakistan in last April — and I intend on going
back to promote my Urdu album. I also intend on hitting the road in
India and more countries in the UK.

8). Do you write/play for other artists as well or are open to do so
in the futur
e?

I have a very musical family, and they are a great bunch of people to
collaborate with. Between my brother’s band (DeadShyre), my cousins’
band (Noori) and the amazing band I tour with, I am very pleased with
the creative output we generate. In addition, I am always open to
collaborating with other artists in the future.

9).Could you throw some light on your song “mind over murder” as its
despite being very interesting can be quite controversial looking at just the words
?

I grew up in Saudi Arabia and in Pakistan and lived there until my
mid-teens. I am familiar with the sentiment of the peoples of these
Islamic countries towards the west. I understand having criticism. But
I don’t understand being filled with hatred, anger and violence. In
‘Mind Over Murder’ I write about my dissatisfaction with violent and
hateful means of expression promoted by religious extremists and
fundamentalists.

10). Any message for your fans?

I’m nothing without you. Thank you for your support, and I promise to
remain most loyal to you.

Kaavish-Album Review

Finally it’s out, clearly the most delayed album ever.
The album release is a relief albeit it comes with a record label change and a band member quitting
.The album has a soft mood and (a couple less than a dozen) mellow tracks, which go very well with the name of the album Gunkali.
The tracks feature Pakistans best musicians i.e. Aamir Zaki, Gumby, Omran, Khalid Khan etc.
Album begins with Chaand Taaray with Omran on guitars, adding a funk with his playing, makes one realize that Omran does have his signature sound & playing style. The vocals in this track also seem to be recorded at a different time measure compared to the measures kept for the instruments, innovative vocal breaks placement.
“Dharkan Hai Tu Dil Hoon mein, Mil Jayein To Jee Uthain” is Chaltay Rahein is all about movements and not ceasing oneself anywhere  giving a very nomadic feel as natural elements like the water flowing has been incorporated in the song writing.

Bachpan and Tere Pyaar Mein both released on video prior to the album release have been reworked in their album versions, thankfully.Tere Pyaar Mein wasn’t that old of a track but the extra Piano notes in the album version are no harm to the ears. With Bachpan too,Abbas Premjees guitar work is interesting compared to the video version. Kaavish surely knew what they had to do when compiling the album.

Morey Sayyan is the last video released coinciding with the album release, very emotional track. The violin, flute and Piano add to the emotiveness.

Koi Hai To Sahee  is nicely written by Jaffer and Maaz has optimism and a tinge of pessimism in it .Good Duet between the two although feels a bit rushed with Jaffer quickly repeating verses in some instances, very opera like ending on this one.
Piya Dekho Na ,Sunn Zara Dekho and Dil mein Meray are all good tracks too, Dil mein Meray track credits mentions Jaffer Zaidi and Samra Khan on vocals. Now either my ears can’t decipher female vocal pitches anymore or Samra has sung exactly in the voice as Jaffer,or is producing instrument sounds with her mouth or it is a misprint in the credits.

If there is a Genre- I want to place this album under it is  Contemporary Classical. There are 10 tracks and unlike most other albums there no repeat tracks with Extended/Guitar/Vocal/Club Mixes- takes one back to the times when artists stayed true to their game, bold move, album integrity is kept intact while ignoring the commercial viability that could’ve come with the inclusion of such tracks.

An album worth buying and for showcasing maturity from the ever-increasing Pakistani Musical Talent.

Facebook Racist

Does Anyone know the basis on which Facebook decides the languages it is available in? If number of users are anything to go by, then Urdu is certainly taking a beating. Despite being among the top 10 spoken languages of the world , it is still not part of the languages facebook is available in,how discriminating is that ?
There are language options available for languages far below the reach and usage of Urdu, is it on part due to the lack of facebook programmers who could develop the content in Urdu?
I mean if it is any relief to your peoples closed brains, more of India speaks Urdu than they and the world knows about it, their Bollywood movies are all in Urdu, their Bollywood songs are all in Urdu, but no , they want to credit all that to Hindi,(Indian nationalists certainly won’t let a language that is predominantly used by the Muslims reach a higher level), Gimme A Break ,will you?
Facebook, Are you listening,to what is right or what is common belief?

From Under The Bleachers to Winning Over

She Had a smile
That Stayed A whilealbum_cover_zameer
Every Night with Her
Brought Me Sunshine

If you hear the above the opening lines to a song, I am sure, you would want to hear the rest of the song too. These lines have been taken from the song First Love, from the album From Under The Bleachers.
An interesting thing about of the albums name is that it appears in 3 songs in the name, putting the listener in a doubt about which track is the title track, or it could be that the reason for the naming the album are the tracks.

Back to the song, First Love, it also has a complete-r fuller Urdu version (not on the album) called Yaad
which you can watch here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaWNx0yp4Ko .

Story based song, Where The Sun Don’t Shine, also talks about the mystery of women, that even after a long period MR. Singer still hasn’t learnt completely learnt about his love” TELL ME WHY DON’T YOU GO WHERE THE SUN DON’T SHINE NO MORE”, somehow this lyric doesn’t make me think straight, and with the singing being in a naughty voice, it’s only natural that thoughts wander.

“With you” is the second video to be released for the album and this track is just marvelous, shows the beauty of being in love being narrated in stages in a story form (again). Soft bass lines and an over infectious chorus line gets you to LOVE the track at the first listen. Very much proves, that even when love at first sight doesn’t happen, love at first sound is possible.

You Lied To Me: as the name of song suggests is about betrayal but also that of the writer to still forgive the mistakes of his love, and “wants her back” even what she has put him through with her betrayals and lies.

It’s easy to be filled with hatred for Zameer after hearing Mind Over Muder, because the lyrics are so blasphemous that you wish he is stoned to death for writing this song. But once the initial hatred dies out  and you begin to think logically about the concept of the song, written from the head of a brain washed conscious terrorist lamenting against God and questioning HIS way but still hell bent to carrying out his acts. Beware though because the song has an immense amount of soul ,the melody may make you start thinking with the mind of a terrorist.

The debut single Win or Defeat is written with the philosophy  in Zameers own words is that “ When Defining Success for yourself ,Don’t worry about winning or losing as defined by societal perceptions but to just follow your own dream”, with such a theme, the lyrics have an uplifting tone and an upside tempo .

This is a good album and an excellent way to promote Pakistani talent globally, if anybody understands english and you need to showcase Pakistani music to them, just present this album and watch them sing praises for what our country has. As good Zameer is on his album he is just a tad better in his LIVE performances.

If you haven’t gotten the album, what are you waiting for ? go ahead and buy it straight away .
It’s available from amazon.com too.
